The 2023 Beneath Our Feet is a striking, terroir-driven red blend that reflects the rugged soils and altitude of the Breedekloof. Composed of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, each varietal plays a distinct role in shaping the wine’s layered personality.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue with a youthful violet rim. The nose is immediately expressive: Syrah leads with aromas of blackcurrant, cracked black pepper, and violets, while Grenache brings lifted red cherry, raspberry, and a touch of sweet spice. Mourvèdre adds depth with earthy undertones, cured meat, and dried herbs, and Carignan contributes a vibrant edge of tart red fruit and subtle rusticity.
The palate is finely balanced and textured. Juicy red and black berries unfold alongside notes of plum, licorice, and wild herbs. The tannins—largely shaped by Mourvèdre and Syrah—are firm yet polished, giving structure without heaviness. Grenache softens the mid-palate with a supple, almost silky mouthfeel, while Carignan injects freshness and a lively acidity that keeps the wine energetic and precise.
A distinct mineral thread runs through the wine, echoing its stony origins, leading to a long, savory finish marked by spice, dried thyme, and a gentle grip.
This is a wine of authenticity and finesse—harmonious yet complex, with each varietal clearly articulated while seamlessly integrated into the whole.
